3 Ways to Drive Smart Growth

What's Inside...

1. Highlights from Philly

A long-time client recently gathered in Philly.

We looked at organizational growth over the last 5 years.

  • 4x revenue
  • 8x increase in team
  • Expanded geographic footprint

The team celebrated wins from the prior 3-year strategic plan.

They laughed and built memories, continuing to develop the camaraderie that drives successful organizations.

And then they did the hard (& fun) work of developing their 2030 Bold Goal.

This can be hard in today's shifting environment.

But we have to think beyond the next quarter, the next curve ball to something bigger.

What does success look like for your company 5 years from now?

2. Smart Growth

A Bold Goal draws a line in the sand.

It says, "This is what success looks like. This is the impact we want to make."

It's what you will look at in the early days of 2030 to measure success.

It may be:

  • 50% increase profit
  • Launch 3 new offerings
  • Expand footprint in 2 new markets
  • Spend more time with family (summers off!)
  • Sell company for $1B
  • Something else....

Can the Bold Goal change over time? Maybe.

Will new factors arise that affect the Bold Goal? Likely.

Does having a Bold Goal give you a starting point? Definitely.

As you develop your company's Bold Goal, "Grow" is a start but not a strategy.

Consider -

  • Some companies may not be in a position to grow over the next year or more based on internal or external factors.
  • Companies don't want to grow so rapidly they can't keep up with quality or demand. Processes break, team comms suffer, & delivery degrades.

If your company wants to grow, smart growth hinges on three things:

  • Strategic Alignment: Leadership clearly defines the company's direction. It's written down and communicated to the team.
  • Established Operating Model: You have an operating model with clear roles & responsibilities, accountability, and decision making authority.
  • Consistent Communication: Your team understands how their work fits into the big picture via a consistent meeting cadence and comms.

The good news is that you don't have to do all of these at once.

Just pick one and start today.
