Business Development for Busy Lawyers

What's Inside...

1. Making BD a Priority

Business development is one priority of your firm's growth strategy.

Last fall, I shared reflections of the managing partner of a growing law firm.

This year, I am advising one of the firm's attorneys as he develops and implements his Practice Area account plan.

To start, we took a step back. What is BD? What isn't BD?

BD is

  • Finding and creating new growth opportunities
  • Building strategic partnerships and relationships
  • Opening doors that don’t yet exist
  • Connecting dots between market needs and services
  • Asking: “Where can the business grow next and how?”

BD is not

  • Pure sales (closing deals already defined)
  • Marketing (brand awareness, demand gen, messaging)
  • Account management (servicing existing clients)
  • Short-term revenue chasing at all costs
  • Just networking without a strategy
  • Saying yes to everything

We then discussed common misperceptions and how to overcome them.

At the end of the day, business development is about service.

Where what you offer best meets the needs of this world...

How are you making business development a priority to fuel growth?
