Lawyer to Leader - Part 2

What's Inside...

1. Think Like an Entrepreneur

Last week, I shared how my client, and the managing partner of a law firm, ordered copies of Big Business to Small Business for his entire leadership team.

As the firm grows, he is intentionally developing Triple Threat leaders...

Lawyers who are experts, entrepreneurs, AND leaders in equal measure.

Because he understands that true impact happens where all three meet.

It's true for law firms and beyond.

Expert — Masters of their craft who inspire trust.
Entrepreneur — Innovators who create & seize opportunity.
Leader — Motivators of people, purpose, and culture.

Today, we explore 4 facets of thinking like an entrepreneur INSIDE an established firm or company (aka "intrapreneur") —

  1. Bias for Action — Entrepreneurs take initiative, are willing try new things, don't need to be told what to do, and enjoy a high degree of autonomy & accountability to drive results.
  2. Growth Mindset — Entrepreneurs are less afraid of being wrong. "Failure" is feedback...simply data...to create, innovate, test, & improve.
  3. Ruthlessly Cut Waste — Entrepreneurs design for speed, cut through bureaucracy, thrive on lean teams to pivot quickly, and understand that a lean structure drives ownership and innovation.
  4. Intense Client Focus — Entrepreneurs know that the market dictates success and regularly seek feedback to keep clients front & center.

So, how can your company embrace an entrepreneurial mindset?

Simply start with small steps and build upon successes —

  • Promptly respond to client emails
  • Cull layers of bureaucratic decision making
  • Seek client feedback throughout an engagement
  • Develop and test innovative fee structures
  • Write articles and speak at conferences to elevate practice areas

These are just a few ideas to get the ideas flowing...

How are you developing Triple Threat Leaders to fuel growth?
