The AI-Enabled Attorney

What's Inside...

1. Technology as a Priority

When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.

That's why your firm's growth strategy needs to be grounded in a focused set of shared priorities, typically around 6 Pillars of Growth:

  • Products & Services
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Technology & Infrastructure
  • People & Culture
  • Business Development
  • Finance

A few weeks ago, I shared about my work advising an attorney as he develops and implements his business development plan.

Now, let's dig into Technology as a growth priority – through the lens of technology transformation that I'm driving at a growing law firm.

The "AI-enabled attorney" may sound fancy.

But really it's about understanding how technology can assist internal business operations and external client delivery.

"AI-enabled" might look like using Generative AI to draft marketing materials, but sometimes it's simply automating a manual process like scheduling meetings.

Define the Baseline

Before jumping to specific technologies, it's important to understand the baseline - aka the current state.

  • What tools and technologies exist in the firm today?
  • What business processes are manual/automated?
  • How are clients being served? What is manual/automated?

Capture Pain Points

  • Where do bottlenecks exist in business ops and client service?
  • What business ops needs does tech not address/address poorly?
  • What client service needs does tech not address/address poorly?

Envision the Future

  • How might technology relieve one or some of the existing bottlenecks?
  • How might technology better serve business operations or clients?
  • What privacy, policy, ethical, security, or other controls are needed?

At the end of the day, technology is not the solution - it is an enabler.

How are you investing in technology to fuel growth?
