Lawyer to Leader - Part 3

What's Inside...

1. Build Your Leaders — 6 Characteristics

Two weeks ago week, I shared how my client, and the managing partner of a law firm, ordered Big Business to Small Business for his leadership team.

As the firm grows, he is intentionally developing Triple Threat leaders...

Lawyers who are experts, entrepreneurs, AND leaders in equal measure.

Last week, we explored 4 facets of thinking like an Entrepreneur.

Expert — Masters of their craft who inspire trust.
Entrepreneur — Innovators who create & seize opportunity.
Leader — Motivators of people, purpose, and culture.

Today, we explore 6 characteristics of leaders —

  1. Vision & Values — Leaders understand the big picture, know who they are, what they believe, and what they will and will not stand for.
  2. People Motivators — Leaders lead with "Why" & inspire others to act.
  3. Financially Fluent — Leaders understand the business — P&L, cash flow, & balance sheet? no problem — and how their practice is performing at any point in time, AND they can translate the value of their work into new business.
  4. Build Systems & Structure — Leaders create the environment, scaffolding, and structure for others to succeed.
  5. Influence — Leaders understand that culture is caught — not taught — and they model the behavior they want to see.
  6. Adapt to Change — Leaders know that the only constant is change, and that change — even good change — is hard. They see the big picture and bring the team along throughout the process.

I've seen these hold true leading hundreds of Airmen in the Air Force and hundreds of consultants in corporate America.

So, how can your company develop its leaders?

Simply start with small steps and build upon successes —

  • Hold time for leaders to "get out of the weeds" and think big picture - like monthly business reviews, quarterly updates, and annual planning.
  • Clearly define roles & responsibilities and hold accountable for results.
  • Prioritize training to hone foundational business and leadership skills.

These are just a few ideas to get the ideas flowing...

How are you developing Triple Threat Leaders to fuel growth?
